The Newstead Courts units are close to Fred French Home on the original land on which the house Penquite House was built.
It had been the town home of RE Lawrence, who was the person given a wide area of land in the early days of Tasmanian settlement.
The Villages consist of 44 one-bed units (some have a sunroom attached) which were the built as part of the original project of the Masonic fraternity after the Second World War. The Masonic Lodges of Launceston and Northern Tasmania decided to build a Village to assist in the housing of Masonic Veterans, their widows and unmarried daughters.
Present days requirements for “disabled” housing have led to management upgrading the units, putting in ramps, easy access showers, modernised kitchens and very pleasing interior decoration.
Other features include:
- Social activities and outings
- Close proximity to café/beauty salon/pathology services
- Maintenance and gardening attended to.
