How long have you been with DPS?
I’ve been at DPS Publishing for about five months now.
What is your role?
I’m a web developer, which means I’m working on developing and improving our websites, working on new features, new websites and new solutions.
What are some of the things you’ve learnt in this role at DPS?
I’ve learnt a lot. Here we are working with a web application framework called Laravel, it’s a PHP framework, which is the language we develop for our websites. I just started working with Laravel here and learning to use it is like working with your hands all your life and then being given a power tool!
What is the best thing about working for DPS?
I feel like with DPS my personal development matters. It’s not like some other organisations that utilise your talent but don’t invest in you and your skills. I feel like I have support and the company wants me to grow with them.
What is the best thing you have worked on?
I like to develop a lot, but the thing I have worked on that is having a big impact, at the moment, is MailCoach. MailCoach is a mail platform we’re using behind the scenes for email campaigns. It’s having a big impact on the organisation because it will work with all our websites and I’m really happy to see that. I also held a training session on it with my coworkers the other day which was very cool.
What is your greatest achievement?
I feel like one of my greatest achievements is getting this job and working with what I love. I’ve lived in Australia for four years and I’m still taking baby steps.
I left everything I had in Brazil to come here. I sold everything, quit my job and basically came here and started my life all over again. I came with my wife and we only had four bags and enough money for a month.
Now I’m more stable in life and DPS has helped me with that.
Now for the fun questions! What’s the best way to start the day?
A shower and black strong coffee. Without a coffee, I can’t even get out of the house. I make my own coffee using a filter and that’s the only one that keeps me awake the whole day. If I don’t have at least one strong black coffee, I can’t make it through the day.
If you could turn any activity into an Olympic sport, what would you have a good chance at winning a medal for?
I like to play football but I’m certainly not good enough to play at the Olympic level, but I would love to be good enough to represent Brazil. I like to play a lot but I’m just an average player. It doesn’t even have to be the gold medal, I just want to be there!
What would be your ‘perfect’ day?
My perfect day is to wake up, have my shower and coffee, and go and do something outside. Just enjoying something outside is great. Spending time with my wife too, maybe watching a movie and having a nice dinner. We enjoy trying new food.
But we always like to go to new places and drive around. About six months ago we drove to Melbourne and came back along the Great Ocean Road, which was a really amazing trip.
