Long queues for housing as SA population ages
Elderly residents are waiting up to three years for places in north-eastern retirement villages in Adelaide as the area is forced to come to grips with a rapidly ageing population.
A survey of local retirement villages found waiting lists of up to 30 and waiting times of between 12 months and three years. Some are investing millions of dollars to cope with an expected influx of elderly people over the next decade and beyond.
The Council on the Ageing (COTA) SA said the numbers will double in the next couple of decades in the 60 plus and 80 plus age group.
