Coalition offers grandparental leave
The Coalition’s promise of new leave entitlements for grandparents has been a positive offer to older workers, according to the National Seniors Association.
The proposed measures allow for one week’s unpaid leave for grandparents when a grandchild is born, and up to 52 weeks for grandparents employed in workplaces with over 100 staff.
National Seniors described the initiative as a sensible measure that recognised the important role grandparents played when a new baby arrived, and more importantly, the policy provided choice.
“The opportunity to take a few months of unpaid leave that can be spent with a grandchild, knowing your job is there to go back to, will be welcomed.”
From the employer perspective, National Seniors believes the policy would also assist with staff retention among older workers, which is critical in the current climate of skills shortages.
