After selling out for a third year in a row, the choir will perform ‘Broadway – Up in Lights’ at the Adelaide Festival Centre.
Starring over 100 choir members aged 65 to 92 from four choirs around South Australia, the performance is the first under new choir director Paul Sinkinson.
An accomplished musical director and pianist, Mr Sinkinson has drawn on a background in musical theatre to direct the performance, which includes songs from Broadway classics such as Mary Poppins and Mamma Mia, to the latest musical sensations including The Greatest Showman, animated musical Sing and Aladdin – coming to Adelaide in April.
He was chosen for the role by choir members themselves after a ‘trial run’ mock rehearsal last year.
ACH Group Social Inclusion Manager Gwyn Elson says ACH Group’s Sing for Joy choirs, which were founded in 2010, were about discovering new interests, meeting like-minded individuals and learning new skills in ways that are fun and welcoming.
“Many of our choir members have a background in musical theatre and are thrilled to perform some well-loved classics alongside hits from recent hit musicals,” she says.
“Our choir offers a fantastic opportunity for public engagement as well as breaking down stereotypes around ageing.”
The Fringe performance includes hits from Singin’ in the Rain, Sun Valley Serenade, Annie Get Your Gun, Easter Parade and Priscilla Queen of the Desert.
