UnitingCare Ageing ‘top’ employer for LGBTI people
Aged care provider, UnitingCare Ageing, has been recognised as one of Australia’s top 20 employers for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Intersex (LGBTI) people by ACON, New South Wales’ leading HIV and LGBTI health organisation.
ACON’s Pride in Diversity Award is determined using the Pride in Diversity’s Australian Workplace Equality Index (AWEI), an annual survey that evaluates and benchmarks LGBTI workplaces.
UnitingCare Ageing is an inclusive faith based organisation, and has been included in Pride in Diversity’s ‘Top 20’ list for the first time.
“Earlier this year we showed our commitment to celebrating diversity by marching in the Mardi Gras. Now, we have another reason to celebrate,” says Steve Teulan, director of UnitingCare Ageing.
UnitingCare Ageing has worked closely with ACON, and has facilitated LGBTI cultural competency training, with more 500 staff and is showing great leadership in the aged care and not for profit sectors.
“We work to enable people to be who they truly are without judgement, and seek to celebrate the uniqueness and diversity of all people,” Mr Teulan says.
“It is fair to say this award reflects the hard work we have done with ACON, and our continued commitment to not only staff, but our clients and residents alike,” he adds.
As a service group of UnitingCare NSW.ACT, UnitingCare Ageing is responsible for the Uniting Church’s ministry for older people, particularly those who are disadvantaged, vulnerable and isolated.
UnitingCare Ageing supports the federal government's National LGBTI Aged Care Strategy.
“We support and foster individuality and diversity throughout our services, and we work to address the needs, expectations and current service shortfalls experienced by LGBTI communities when accessing care.”
