For Margaret Bolton, Tea Tree Gardens Retirement Village’s resident author, retirement was just the impetus she needed to turn to her love of writing.

Ms Bolton has become a prolific author and recently published three touching, hilarious works.

“I’ve been writing for years,” she says, “but in earnest only when I retired about fifteen years ago.”

Since moving into an independent living unit at RetireAustralia’s Tea Tree Gardens in 2000, Ms Bolton has become a prolific author and recently published a further three touching, hilarious works.

She celebrated the impressive achievement surrounded by friends, family and fellow residents at her book launch, held in the Tea Tree Gardens community hall.

Fifty people, including Ms Bolton’s neighbours and the village librarian, turned out on the day to enjoy a cup of tea, a reading and a book signing.

Ms Bolton also spoke about her writing and the inspiration for her latest works. “I often write about things that touch me deeply, but I need to have time to reflect,” she says.

“I write stories about my childhood, but I weave some imagination into those!” Ms Bolton has released a collection of short stories about her childhood and life titled Tales from Port Vic, along with a pocket book of poetry and Prisoners of War, a short story about her grandparents’ experience in World War I that was inspired by the discovery of some old National Archive letters.

They have so far been well-received amongst the local literary community, continuing the trend began by previous books Not Another Nun Story and Mother and Son.

Lucy Mulvany, Village Manager of Tea Tree Gardens, says, “We’re all very proud of Margaret and her terrific accomplishment.”

“It’s a great example of how retirement can open doors and lead to wonderful experiences!”

Ms Bolton’s books are available from Ginninderra Press.
