Excellence in Palliative Care recognised with new awards

Peter Jenkin, an aged care nurse practitioner with Resthaven received the inaugural award for his ‘displayed excellence in Palliative Care in an aged care setting’.

The award was one of three new awards introduced in 2017 by Palliative Care Australia in order to recognise and support palliative care professionals in the aged care setting, palliative care volunteers, and professionals working in rural and remote areas.

“These awards offer these talented individuals and teams an even stronger platform and capability to continue their invaluable care and careers in palliative care,” Palliative Care Australia Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Liz Callaghan says.

She adds that the awards provide winners with development opportunities that they other wise may have missed out on.

Each team/organisational award winner receives $4000 to go towards professional development for their entire team, whilst individual winners, like Resthaven’s Mr Jenkin, receive $2000 to go towards personal professional development.

“We are so proud of Peter – he is a thoroughly worthy recipient of this award,” says Resthaven Executive Manager Residential Services Tina Cooper.

“Since he began with Resthaven in 2011, Peter has demonstrated ongoing commitment to embedding palliative care into Resthaven’s clinical structure.

“This award win is testament to Peter’s outstanding efforts on behalf of the Resthaven community.”

All up there were five individual and two team awards presented at the Australian Palliative Care Conference gala dinner in Adelaide.
