Taking mum and dad into the workplace
It takes New York to come up with the biggest new ideas and now the big advertising agency Ogilvy has come up with a bottler – take your Mum and Dad to work.
After staff members became tired of their parents constantly asking “What exactly do you do?”, Ogilvy advertising executive, Kate Cronin, decided that a tour of the company’s office would be just the answer for puzzled parents.
Ms Cronin said that “ideally, through this event, parents will gain a deeper understanding for our industry so they can better appreciate successes and accomplishments that their children achieve every day”.
The move was applauded by the general manager of Link Recruitment in Melbourne, Gemma Avon, who said that with more women working and more grandparents looking after the grandchildren there could be a gap between generations when it came to understanding the demands of the modern workplace.
Ms Avon said that “if my dad only had to see the number of people I deal with every day, and the number of decisions I have to make, he would be astounded”. A trip to the workplace for parents could be eye-opening because the workplace had changed so much, and viewing adult children as productive members of that workplace could also give parents a family boost, she said.
