Simple balance check identifies those at risk of falling
Australian researchers have reported that a simple 10 second test of bilateral stance on a foam surface and a one legged stance, can easily identify older women with poor balance and hence at a higher risk of falling. Such tests could be easily administered in a community setting according to researchers at the University of Queensland, and reported in the latest Australasian Journal of Ageing.
Women older than 50 years who fail such tests should be referred for education and fall prevention intervention, the report recommends.
