Retirees keep on working
More than 60% of Australian workers plan to work after retirement and 45% say they want to do voluntary work, according to a new study of 13,000 people aged over 45 years, undertaken by Swinburne University’s Centre for Business, Work and Ageing.
Over half those surveyed said they wanted to continue working to stay physically active and involved, while 46% wanted to stay mentally active. 38% said they wanted extra cash, 36% wanted to stay in touch with people, and 31% were interested in making a contribution to the community.
Of those who intended to keep working, 45% said they intended to keep going as volunteers. Another 36% said they wanted to work part time and 11% were planning to be self- employed.
The survey backs up Australian Bureau of Statistics figures which show people retiring earlier than they expect. The men planned to retire at 63 and women at 61, compared to the current average retirement ages of 58 and 47 respectively.
