Recruiting firm to target older workforce

A leading Australasian recruiting and consulting group has told its members to move in hiring older workers after a major report showed that few employers are organising for an ageing workforce.

The Recruitment and Consulting Services Association (RCSA), which has more than 3,600 members in Australia and New Zealand, wants to take the lead in attracting and retaining older workers who are “committed, loyal, and keen to work”.

The RCSA chief executive, Julie Mills, said the Intergenerational Report had stated clearly that “people aged 55 to 64 will be the fastest-growing group of workers over the next 40 years. If the recruitment industry is serious about helping clients beat the skills and labour shortage we must continue to focus on this age group”.

A recent survey by the Manpower company, which checked 28,000 employers in 25 countries including Australia, found that only 17% of employers had strategies in place to recruit workers aged 50 and older. The survey found that many employers had not considered the percentage of their workforce that would retire in the next five to 10 years and the productivity and intellectual capital which would then be lost.
