‘Pushing the boundaries’ of care

A chance to hear and discuss the views of people who are passionate about the care of people with dementia, and new ideas on how to “push the boundaries” of what can be achieved in residential care for people with dementia, will be the main focus of the Living Well, Longer event next month.

Internationally acclaimed photographer, Professor Cathy Greenblat, will return to Australia for the two dementia care events in Wollongong and Sydney in March.

Professor Greenblat, whose photographs explore and illustrate high quality care and the experience of living a full life with dementia, was in Australia last year for the highly successful tour of her Love, Loss and Laughter exhibition hosted by Alzheimer’s Australia (www.lovelossandlaughter.com).

There will also be presentations from Professor Richard Fleming, who is NSW/ACT Dementia Training Study Centre (DTSC) director, and Colin McDonnell, manager of UnitingCare Ageing’s Starrett Lodge, an award winning aged care facility in New South Wales.

Professor Fleming specialises in improving our understanding and design of buildings that enhance the quality of life of people with dementia. Mr McDonnell has been instrumental in developing Starrett Lodge into an award winning home that demonstrates the effectiveness of good design, vision directed management and the involvement of families and the community in delivering high quality care for people with dementia.

The events are presented by the NSW/ACT DTSC, UnitingCare Ageing, the University of Wollongong, Living Well Longer – Global Challenges Program and the Australian Journal of Dementia Care. For inquiries, email dementia@uow.edu.au
