PM rules out changes to super access

Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd
Kevin Rudd has ruled out raising the age at which people can access superannuation, to bring that in line with the proposed rise in pension eligibility age to 67.
This is despite such a recommendation from the Government’s Henry tax inquiry which said both pension and super age levels should be aligned.
There has been an outcry, especially from unions, about both rises, but criticism of the superannuation rise has focussed on the needs of people who for physical reasons may have to retire earlier and, without any other solution such as super, have to go onto a disability pension.
Mr Rudd ruled the super rise out but said the rise in the pension age, a ‘tough decision’ was correct.
