PM promises to consider super contributions for carers
Prime Minister (PM), Kevin Rudd, has promised carers to consider their proposal for the Government to contribute to their superannuation savings, after they presented him with a report saying that carers – mainly women- were likely to have accumulated less than $25,000 in superannuation by the time they reached 65.
According to a report in The Australian, the PM said that the report, compiled for Carers Australia by the National Centre for Social and Economic Modelling (NATSEM) had important recommendations the Government would consider.
He was speaking at the launch of Carers Week.
“We must provide greater financial support and assist carers to build retirement income,” Mr Rudd was reported as saying.
“Second, we must assist carers to participate in the paid workforce.
“And third, we must work harder to help carers themselves stay in good health.”
