Old more active than young
It appears older people are not the only ones coping with mobility issues after a UK survey revealed individuals aged 55 years and over are more active than the younger generation. Whether you call it a case of ‘laziness’ or not, results from the survey revealed older people exercise about 28 minutes more per week than their younger counterparts.
The finding was reportedly the motivation behind a new campaign inspired by London’s 2012 Olympic Games which aims to encourage the remaining 7.8 million people over the aged of 55 years with long-term health conditions to lead more active lives. Tall Trees is also running a similar active lifestyle program for its clients to coincide with the Games this year.
The UK’s Your Personal Best campaign encourages the “inactive to be more active”.
It is an ongoing challenge for people to set personal and realistic activity goals to achieve their personal best by engaging in a range of lifestyle activities from gardening to walking the dog.
According to Dr William Bird, who was quoted on Medical News Today website: “Personal Best enables [people] to achieve their personal best without having to become Olympic athletes.”
Small increases in physical activity are reportedly linked to improved quality of life, and some protection against chronic disease, particularly in older people.
Stay tuned next week when DPS News reports on Tall Trees’ Senior Olympics initiative.
