New public housing unit in Tas
The Tasmanian Government is moving to create a new government business enterprise to take over all land and houses in public ownership.
The new organisation is expected to be established soon within the Premier’s Department to tackle homelessness and public housing shortages using the $60 million earmarked by Premier Paul Lennon earlier this year for affordable housing.
It would take over ownership of all 11,600 government homes and units now managed by Housing Tasmania, and would be able to borrow funds to maintain assets and buy more land.
It would also liaise with developers and property owners to encourage the building of more cheap housing stock.
