Melbourne men boosting the facelift numbers

In Melbourne it is not only women who are readily giving themselves up to the plastic surgeon’s knife – an increasing number of professional businessmen are seeking treatment apparently to maintain a competitive edge.

Toorak plastic surgeon, Chris Moss, has seen an increase in the number of male patients from 10% to between 20% and 30% over the past two years with the men ranging in age from their 40s and 50s through to the 70s.

Dr Moss said “they’re mostly in their 40s and 50s but I had a man in his 70s who had a facelift. It used to be once a month; now it’s a weekly occurrence. The reason they’re doing it is to maintain their competitive edge, to stay in the workforce as long as possible, to look refreshed and up-to-date”.

While these patients had been mostly working in business, advertising, management, sales, and media, Brighton plastic surgeon, Alan Breidahl, told The Age newspaper that another group involved “wealthy, healthy 70-year-olds who want to make the most of their retirement”.

The current competitive-supporting surgery costs around $17,000 for a basic facelift, $25,000 for a facelift including necklift, brow lift and eyelift, $8,500 for a “man boob” reduction, up to $10,000 for rhinoplasty (nose job), and $13,000 for abdominal liposuction.
