IRT forges ageing research link with University of Canberra

Research and teaching to help Australians remain healthy and active in retirement will receive a boost with the University of Canberra (UC) and Illawarra Retirement Trust (IRT), a provider of aged care and retirement living, join forces under a new deal.

Under the deal, the two organisations will cooperate over research and teaching in a number of health disciplines, as well as on the social benefits of a close relationship between them.

Other areas to be explored under the memorandum of understanding include inviting residents to become mentors for University students, research into how the built environment contributes to independent living by older Australians and potentially establishing a supervised student physiotherapy clinic at Kangara Waters.

The UC Music program may run classes and performances at Kangara Waters.

IRT chief executive officer, Nieves Murray, said “IRT is proud to collaborate with the University of Canberra, which along with IRT has recently celebrated its 40th anniversary. The synergies between the two organisations, with years of experience, will enable both to provide a greater understanding of health service provision and the issues of an ageing society.

“The partnership will allow IRT to create strong links with our neighbouring university, enabling us to explore opportunities in teaching, research, social and recreational activities to benefit older Australians within our community,” she added.
