Honey not so helpful for ulcer patients
The use of honey as a specialist medical treatment apparently makes little difference to the healing process and could even lead to further complications.
A New Zealand trial put 368 patients with leg ulcers into two random groups with one group given conventional compression bandages and the other group treated with bandages covered in honey.
After 12 weeks there was no significant difference in the rate of healing between the two groups with the honey treatment proving to be much more expensive. The study published in the British Journal of Surgery also found that the non-honey group remained in better shape than the honey-covered ulcer patients.
