Hearing checks for sea and tree changers

Posted

The far north of New South Wales is providing retirees with a sea and tree change, sunshine, clean air, and the chance to get the old hearing checked out.

More than 50% of all Australians over the age of 60 have hearing problems, and among people over 70 the figure rises to 75%.

The Federal Government hearing services provider, Australian Hearing, is raising awareness of hearing loss in far north NSW and encouraging those local residents to get their hearing checked.

The district manager of Australian Hearing Lismore, John Eakin, said: “We are putting the spotlight in Lismore on what is a growing issue for locations around Australia with ageing population”.

Despite being so widespread, Mr Eakin said hearing loss remained an under-recognised health problem with some older people not realising they were affected while others did not think that their hearing could be improved.

Audiologists from Australian Hearing Lismore also provide regular services in Ballina and Australian Hearing will be offering free screenings at several local pharmacies during April and May.
