For Edna,114, life is a slice of cake

At 114 the world’s oldest woman, Edna Parker, has just celebrated her birthday by indulging in her favourite thing – a slice of special cake.

Having outlived her own children Ms Parker, of Shelbyville, Indiana, became the oldest known person following the recent death of Yone Minagawa, a Japanese woman four months her senior.

Her ranking has been confirmed by the Gerontology Research Group, a California-based organisation that tracks and verifies the ages of people 110 and older.

Ms Parker was born on April 20,1893, never drank alcohol or tried tobacco and led an active life. Her experienced advice to others for a good life was “more education”.

The Parker family – apart from having the oldest elder on the planet – consists of five grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and 13 great-great grandchildren. The youngest, seven month old Kole Scott, sat on Edna Parker’s lap for the big birthday party.
