Don earns ‘Australian of the Year’ for camaraderie

Seventy eight year old Victorian, Don Cox, was presented with an ‘Australian of the Year’ award from Victorian residential aged care home, Lifeview Emerald Glades, yesterday.

Mr Cox (pictured) is a vibrant resident who enjoys using his handy man skills, which he's able to do with much gusto through the home's growing Men's Shed initiative.

The Men's Shed has empowered Mr Cox and his fellow male residents to craft memorable garden ornaments and displays for the Lifeview home and for sale to the public.

A sense of positive ageing and camaraderie has evolved in the Men's Shed; the male residents have a space for them to just be ‘men’, get their hands dirty, have a heartfelt laugh and share stories that men can truly relate to over a beer.

A true all-rounder, Mr Cox’s handy man skills also extend to technology. His age is no barrier as he's often seen fixing TV's and setting up movies and activities for residents to all enjoy together.

It's all in a day's work for Mr Cox who is as humble as they come.

To celebrate Australia Day and Mr Cox’s achievements, Lifeview Emerald Glades are hosting a traditional barbecue on the outdoor patio overlooking the hills of Emerald, with all the Aussie trimmings.
