I have been at The Birches for over three years and it was good until the lockable wings were left open all day and night and dementia patients wandered 24/7. Now we have at least four men who at times are aggressive, angry, destructive, and one uses the whole place as a bathroom. Staff are exhausted, the noise pollution is very distracting, they seem to want to be in my area a lot and so my activities are curtailed and we now have locks on our doors to keep them out. I no longer feel safe enough to leave my room since incidents that have traumatised me. This is just no good enough. We need some respite at least in so we can sleep in peace and not be constantly stressed. This in no way reflects the staff who do such a great job under very trying circumstances. I believe other Nursing Homes still use locked wings for dementia patients so it cannot be a hard and fast rule.
