Southern Cross Care Sandown Apartments
About
Situated in the leafy bay-side suburb of Sandy Bay is this 69 bed ageing-in-place facility which has won several national awards for excellence in care as well as architectural design.
As part of Sandown Village this premier location is a short walk to a thriving shopping centre with a variety of restaurants and the beach.
This facility boasts luxury fittings throughout with a 15 metre heated salt water hydrotherapy pool and spa for the residents to enjoy.
Elegant and sophisticated furnishings and fittings complement the ambience of the spacious living and dining areas. Individual rooms are generously proportioned with ensuite bathroom. There are several comfortable sitting rooms with tea and coffee making facilities which are suitable for individual activities as well as family gatherings. The easy access gardens with convenient garden seats are also a favourite place for many of the residents.
A well stocked mobile shopping trolley is provided in a central location and ensures that those who find access to nearby shops difficult are able to avail themselves of purchasing items of choice.
As you would expect there is a wide range of activities from which to choose varying from gentle exercise activities to craft and book discussion groups in the well stocked library. The Sandown Wellness Centre is also on site to assist with physical and emotional wellbeing. This provides therapies to ease mind, body and soul in a friendly and aesthetically pleasing environment. A close partnership has been formed with a nearby school which results in meaningful activities and friendships between residents and students.
The serene Chapel with its magnificent stained glass windows is a place of reflection & regular services of all denominations. Pastoral care services are also available to residents and their families in line with our provision of holistic care for both mind and body.
There are close links between the Independent Living Unit residents and the Residential Care Facility and a community center for the use of all residents is located at the Sandy Bay Road end of the complex.
The main building is fully air-conditioned by geothermal energy. The heat source is the return wastewater from Selfs Point Waste Treatment Plant. It is thought to be the first residential facility in the world using return wastewater as its geothermal source.
In 1999 Sandown Village won all four of the Tasmanian Building Industry Awards for which it was eligible. These awards are made annually by the Master Builders Association of Tasmania as a recognition of excellence. It was the first time that one project has won four of the major awards in one year. In addition, the complex was awarded the Minister's Award for Excellence as the best low level care facility in Australia.
