How to compare home care providers after you’ve been assigned a package

So, you’ve been approved for a Home Care Package – now what?

The next step is to choose a provider to manage your funds and deliver the services you need to stay safe and independent at home. But not all providers are created equal, and their fees, flexibility and service models can vary widely.

1. Match services to your needs

Start by identifying what support you need—personal care, help around the house, nursing, transport, or social outings. Some providers are better suited to complex care, while others shine when it comes to companionship and wellness.

? Tip: Ask how they’ll tailor services to your care plan and if they’re able to adapt as your needs change.

2. Understand the fees: What’s normal vs optional?

While your package is subsidised by the government, providers still charge various administration and service fees. Here’s a breakdown of what’s typically charged– and where you may find providers offering lower-cost or no-fee alternatives:

Fee type What’s normal What some providers do
Care management fee Usually 15 – 20% of your package. Covers coordination and oversight of your care. Some charge lower or bundle it with services.
Package management fee Typically 10 – 15% of your package. Pays for admin and financial reporting. Some providers cap it, or waive it entirely.
Hourly rates Ranges from $55 – $75/hr for personal care, cleaning, nursing, etc. Rates vary — always ask for a price list.
Exit fees Up to $500, though many no longer charge this. Many have scrapped this fee altogether.
Set-up or onboarding fee Often charged as a one-off cost to start services. Some waive this to attract new clients.
Top-up or private fees Optional if you need services beyond your package allocation. Can offer flexible private-pay options.

? Tip: Look beyond percentages. Ask providers how much of your actual package funding will go toward direct care hours after all fees are deducted.

3. Look for flexibility

Can you choose your own support worker? Are they happy to use your preferred physiotherapist or cleaner? Providers who offer flexibility and control often deliver a more personalised experience.

4. Check for cultural fit & reputation

Ask friends or family for recommendations, read online reviews, and speak with providers about your cultural or language preferences. A good provider will take time to listen and tailor your care plan.

5. It’s OK to change providers

You’re not locked in. If your provider isn’t the right fit, you can switch. Your unspent funds move with you, and a new provider can support you with the transition.
