What is Dementia Support Australia?
Dementia Support Australia (DSA) is a partnership led by HammondCare that brings together dementia expertise from across the aged care industry.
It provides the Dementia Behaviour Management Advisory Service (DBMAS) and Severe Behaviour Response Team (SBRT) nationwide.
Our role is to improve the quality of life for people living with dementia and their carers. We do this by working to understand the causes of change in behaviour in the person with dementia and by supporting care workers, carers and service providers.
The DMBAS program supports staff and carers in community, residential, acute and primary care settings with information, advice, assessment and short term case management. DBMAS can provide support with assessment of the person with dementia and their carer support network and build capacity for carers to be understand the impact and response to behaviours. The service also provides clinical support, information and advice (face to face and via telephone/telehealth and email). Our service links current research, literature and evidence based guidelines to practice - offering specialised support to people living with dementia.
We support those with diverse needs including atypical dementia, younger onset dementia, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and Culturally and Linguistically diverse clients, people who identify as LGBTIQ, are homeless or at risk of homelessness, veterans and care leavers. DBMAS has procedures in place to decide when the SBRT is the best service option for referrals in residential aged care to address the needs of people with severe and very severe behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia.
Dementia Support Australia is the gateway for DBMAS and SBRT. It is one national service. This means that the right team member(s) will respond at the right time to the local needs and ensures consistency in service delivery.
We acknowledge the individual nature of all referrals and afford our clients the utmost respect and dignity. We are responsive and available and take a person-centred holistic approach with clients. We seek to work collaboratively with the person living with dementia, their carers and medical specialists to implement a range of support strategies that include non-pharmacological approaches.
HammondCare’s experience in leading DBMAS and SBRT along with the strength of its partners enables Dementia Support Australia to deliver these vital service with a professional and pragmatic approach. Our consultants include Psychologists, Geriatricians, Psycho-Geriatricians, Neuro-Psychologists, Registered Nurses, Occupational Therapists and other allied health staff.
