UCWB Home Visitor and Volunteer Programs
UCWB has two Community Visitor and Volunteer programs. Each program regularly links people over the age of 65 with volunteers who provide companionship and friendly interaction either in person or by phone. Participants & volunteers can be residents of aged care facilities or older people living in their own home who would like to be linked with other people living in the community.
UCWB Home Visitor Program - (in person visits)
The program offers regular friendly visits that are relaxed and social in nature. The program aims to enrich older individual's and volunteer's lives with company and friendship.
As we get older, sometimes our circumstances change & getting out and about it not as easy as it used to be. Family and friends may not live close by or simply get caught up in the rush of modern life. Older friends who used to visit may face similar challenges with mobility and transportation, or have moved into a residential facility themselves.
- The program recipients of Home Care Packages living in the community and residents of aged care facilities.
- Participants can be receiving aged care services from another organisation.
Visits to participants
Regular weekly or fortnightly visits can be organised for people who live either in their own home or in a residential facility. Volunteers are carefully matched with individuals and groups who share common interests. It makes for some interesting discussions, a few laughs and most importantly, nurtures the sense of belonging we all need to feel.
Training, matching & orientation to this special role, with ongoing support, is provided by UCWB. People over 18 years of age, of all backgrounds, who would like to make a difference in the life of an older person, are encouraged to contact UCWB to find out more about this rewarding volunteer opportunity.
UCWB Community Link program – (friendly phone calls)
The program has been formed to offer a friendly phone call once a week – peer to peer across the community. This happens through individuals and in collaboration with a nominated aged care facility. It is an opportunity to experience friendship with a volunteer from our program, discover common interests and learn about each other’s lives.
All referrals must go through My Aged Care, however UCWB can provide a guided referral on behalf of the participant.
UCWB accepts referrals from other organisations, health care providers, advocates and family members. People can also refer themselves. We will then assist by guiding people through the necessary steps and Government requirements to ensure their needs are met.
“Personally I feel I am wasting my time at home. I have always worked and hate not working so I enjoy doing voluntary work …I get a lot out of it”. Alice, volunteer
“I think about what we’ve talked about … it’s quite refreshing”. Inge, participant
