Workers to claim $1.1m back-pay

The Fair Work Ombudsman has successfully recovered about $70 million for around 54,000 Australians who have been short-changed at work. However, not all employees have been reimbursed.

Fair Work Ombudsman chief financial officer, Mark Scully, said many employers have been unable to locate former staff to pass on the back-pay.

He said some 3,500 people were yet to receive more than $1.1 million in wages owed to them by previous employers.

The Fair Work Ombudsman has launched a new facility on its website in an effort to find the underpaid workers. Workers can log onto http://www.fwo.gov.au and enter their family name and either the business name, entity name or ABN number of a former employer.

Mr Scully said the highest amount owing to an individual was $14,000.

Other significant amounts include $11,000, $10,000 and $9,000 with seven workers owed up to $8,000 and 20 workers owed up to $6,000.
