Wollongong medical students to gain aged care experience
Medical students at the University of Wollongong are to gain experience at the region’s aged care services as part of an agreement with the Illawarra Retirement Trust (IRT), which is the largest provider of aged care services on the NSW South Coast, and which is headquartered in Wollongong.
IRT chief executive officer, Nieves Murray, says that the medical students have started to be placed into several of its residential facilities in Wollongong and Shoalhaven.
Ms Murray says IRT and the university believe it is important for the students to see the complete range of care provided within the aged care system.
“Often…in a clinical practice they see a component of the person rather than the whole person,” she said.
