The search for Australia’s top nurses and midwives will end as nominations for the 2013 HESTA Australian close next Thursday.

Entering its seventh year, the awards acknowledge the dedication and professionalism of Australia’s top nurses, midwives, personal care attendants and assistants in nursing.

“The HESTA Australian Nursing Awards are an opportunity to thank and recognise outstanding nurses for the tireless dedication and care they provide each and every day,” HESTA chief executive, Anne-Marie Corboy, said.

“Nurses play an incredibly important role in our communities — they may not ask for our thanks, but they certainly deserve it.”

DPS News last year spoke with HESTA’s Nurse of the Year 2012, Queensland nurse, Jenny Anderson (pictured second to left), who has 20 years of clinical nursing training.

“Nurses in Australia, as well as right around the world, want to provide good care … and awards like these show good patient care really is happening. It’s a great thing to see,” Ms Anderson told DPS News.

ME Bank has this year provided the prize pool of $30,000, which will be divided between the winners in three award categories — Nurse of the Year, Team Innovation and Outstanding Graduate.

Nurse of the Year and Outstanding Graduate winners receive a $5,000 ME Bank EveryDay Transaction account and $5,000 towards further education. The winner of the Team Innovation award receives a $10,000 development grant to further implement their program or initiative.

Finalists will be announced on 15 April 2013, with interstate finalists flown to Melbourne for the awards dinner on 9 May 2013 where the winners will be revealed.

Stay tuned to DPS News in coming months as we report on the finalists and winners of the HESTA Australian Nursing Awards.
