Volunteers still wanted – but not for Xmas Day

Melbourne’s Sacred Heart Mission has its volunteer roster full for Christmas Day – but needs them desperately during January when 600 people come through their doors each day for breakfast and lunch.

The Open Family, which helps feed 39,000 homeless people said it also had to turn away volunteers on Christmas Day.

Only 75 are needed then, but again volunteers are needed in January and other months.

“It’s a matter of finding volunteers something to do on days other than Christmas Day,” said Hanover Welfare Service’s chief executive, Tony Keenan.

So the message is: enjoy Christmas Day with your family, and volunteer to help others in the coming months.
