Victoria’s commitment to seniors
Victorian Health Minister, David Davis, has highlighted the Coalition’s commitment to tackling key issues facing senior Victorians; including health, transport and the rising cost of living.
Mr Davis, who spoke at the Croydon Probus Club’s Seniors: The Road Ahead Forum recently, said the Coalition Government is committed to supporting seniors in the state to help them continue to live independently at home for as long as possible.
He said “safe, reliable and local public transport is vital to the social inclusion and participation of senior Victorians.”
“That is why we are making transport safer by recruiting 940 fully trained Victoria police protective services officers to provide protection at every railway station in the metropolitan area and in major regional centres,” Mr Davis said.
“We will continue to provide free weekend travel for Victorian seniors card holders to encourage older people to be active in the community.”
Mr Davis said the government understood the considerable cost of living pressures facing many Victorian seniors and had already taken steps to ease the pressure.
“Within the first 100 days of taking office we have extended concessions on electricity bills year-round for Victorian concession card holders,” he said.
He said it is vital that to encourage older people to lead active, healthy lives and provide opportunities for ongoing participation in the community.
A commitment of $1.3 million has been allocated this year for Senior Citizens Organisational Support grants, which will go to nearly 700 multicultural community organisations for seniors.
