Vic well prepared to fight a flu pandemic
Victoria’s health system is in the best position yet to combat a possible influenza pandemic with the announcement of an updated ‘Victorian Health Management Plan for Pandemic Influenza’.
It is an essential guide for health professionals and the community to respond to a new pandemic strain of the virus and to ensure hospitals were well prepared for any demand for services.
Victoria’s chief health officer, Dr John Carnie, said the state in July had lower than average rates of influenza infection with just 73 cases compared to 126 at the same time last year, but said that the community played a major role in the containment of the flu.
“Good personal hygiene, including covering your mouth when coughing and washing your hands regularly, can help reduce the risk of contracting the flu virus.”
“Those at special risk – including persons aged over 65 – are strongly urged to have a yearly flu vaccination and if cold and flu symptoms persist after a few days, contact your local GP,” Dr Carnie said.
