Vic volunteers needed to help cancer patients
Volunteers in Victoria are needed to help people with colorectal cancer navigate their way through a cancer diagnosis via a telephone support service.
The Cancer Council Victoria conducted a pilot ‘Pathfinder’ program that matched cancer patients with volunteers who offered telephone support and information at three-monthly intervals. It showed that the program had a positive effect on the needs and depression levels of patients involved.
Volunteers are now needed to ensure the program continues. People should be able to volunteer for several hours per month to provide information and support over the telephone to patients with colorectal cancer. Full training is provided but listening and communicating effectively, with an interest in helping others, are the main skills required.
