Vic enquiry finds misuse of pharmaceutical drugs
The Victorian Parliament is being urged to look at an electronic prescription system for pharmaceutical drugs to prevent their widespread misuse.
A parliamentary inquiry has found pharmaceutical drugs are regularly misused and abused.
The inquiry has recommended governments consider introducing an electronic prescribing system that would allow doctors and pharmacists to see who has been prescribed what, in real time.
Inquiry chairwoman, Judy Maddigan, says there are major flaws in the current paper-based system.
The Commonwealth has removed legislative barriers to an electronic system.
