Vic Building Commission calls on buildings to cater for disabilities

Victorian Building Commissioner, Tony Arnel, has warned that as Australian demographics continue to change, “we need to find better ways to design and construct our homes to allow better access for our population’s future”.

“There are many simple ways to make a new and or existing home more accessible,” he said.

. Ensure there is a step less entry to the home.

. Wider hallways, corridors and doorways, make it easy for people to move about the
home.

. Ensure there is an accessible toilet on the entry level.

. Consider the height of switches and power points to ensure they are easily accessed by all.

. Garages should be covered and allow for level access to the house.

. Install a shower with a level entry preferably on the entry level of the home.
