US man with Alzheimer’s donates kidney to friend

The US magazine Alzheimer’s Weekly recently reported that a 67 year old American with Alzheimer’s had donated a kidney to his friend.

It claimed he “wants to show others that Alzheimer’s patients still can help others”.

Hal Rowe donated his kidney to long time friend Randy Parsons, in Lubbock Texas.

Parsons, a liver transplant recipient was facing a future on dialysis after his kidneys failed following long term use of anti rejection medication.

Rowe’s offer was made 5 May. The medical transplant committee approved it on 17 June, and surgery took place on 10 July.

The physical health of both is now fine, and a bonus has been a vision improvement for Parsons.
