Top Vic footy tipsters are the over 60s

A Victorian footy tipping survey carried out by the Herald Sun newspaper has found that the top tipsters are in the 61 to 70 age bracket with 51 to 60 year olds coming in a close second, leaving the 21 to 30 year olds struggling along in fifth place.

The newspaper used statistics supplied by ExtraCorp which is responsible for 650,000 tipsters spread across 30,000 competitions and divided the players into decade-sized age groups, occupations, and teams supported.

After the top two groups of experienced punters over 50 the next most successful were those aged 41 to 50 and then those 31 to 40. The worst were aged 11 to 20 with even fans 10 years and younger beating teenaged older brothers and sisters.

Older tipsters again showed up in the occupations list with retirees on top followed by accountants and then a cluster together including teachers, engineers, small businesspeople, administrators, financial analysts, and healthcare workers.

Not surprisingly successful team loyalty has been winning through Geelong, running away at the top of the ladder and minor Premiership winners, was the top team supported by tipsters followed by comparatively successful Hawthorn and Kangaroos. Two of the poorest performing teams in 2007 – Melbourne and Richmond – linger near the bottom.
