Top Vic dementia body turns 25
One of Victoria’s peak bodies providing support for people living with dementia and their families – Alzheimer’s Australia Vic – will celebrate its silver anniversary this year.
Inaugural president, Barbara Potter, said that “in my family two generations of women had Alzheimer’s disease – my grandmother first and then later my mother. I felt bewildered, alone, and outraged by the lack of information and services available for people with dementia and their families”.
“While a lot more is known now about dementia and the illness has been recognised by the government as a national health priority there is still a long way to go. The need for support and services is only going to increase as the population ages”.
Executive director Lynette Moore said that “as we celebrate our silver anniversary this year we say thank you to the many people who have shared the journey so far, and also value the many who will continue supporting us along the pathways. It’s an opportunity to reflect on past success but also to gear up for the future”.
