According to research conducted, there are five reasons people may lie about their age.
A new study finds it is considered “bad manners” to tell people your age because common beliefs reportedly suggest when a person knows your age, they “put you in a particular place in their minds”.
“[People] want you to do things according to your age, and not according to what your heart tells you – that’s why many people would rather lie about their age than have you scrutinise their actions each time,” researchers claim.
Another reason some people may tell porkies about their ‘life digits’ is to score their dream job.
“Some companies will never hire a man or woman over a certain age, hence, the need to lie about your age in order to secure a job,” researchers add.
The research also reveals women mostly lie about their age to ‘fool the opposite sex’.
“They do this in order to get men whom they hope to settle down with,” the authors of the study say. “In a news report some time ago, a man broke up his engagement… not because he found out his partner’s true age, but because she lied about it,” they add.
Other reasons why people lie about their age may be due to ‘plain old denial’ about growing older, as well as the media’s influence which often asserts people should be ashamed about the ageing process. However, researchers conclude with some wise advice, “Whatever your age, love yourself”.
