While overseas, driving, beach, outback and cruising holidays are preferred by Australian holidaymakers aged 50 years and over, a recent survey commissioned by financial provider Apia shows Tasmania as the “domestic destination” of choice for older travellers.
More than 70% of those studied said they had a “bucket list” of where they would like to travel.
Tasmania topped the list of favourite holiday destinations, ahead of Broome, Kakadu and Far North Queensland.
One in 10 travellers aged over 50 years reported they wanted to take a backpacking holiday, as Apia executive manager Grant Taylor said the findings helped to prove older Australian travellers did not want to spend time just “pottering around the garden”.
“They have the time for a long trip, and backpacking presents an affordable alternative to a long-term trip, so it’s no wonder we see one in 10 wanting to give it a go,” Mr Taylor said.
Tasmania has long been described as the state which has “little partying” and offers a “gentler, more soulful” travel experience.
