Survey on elders’ treatment in Australia and other cultures
Casey-Ann Seaniger, from National Seniors Australia (NSA) is currently researching a story on how elders are treated and valued around the world, specifically comparing other cultures to Australia and the United States.
She is seeking volunteers from people who have migrated to Australia from either Europe, Middle East or Asia who are willing to talk about how elderly people are treated in their home country. They may be currently being cared for by a son/daughter or are caring for your elderly parent.
In her interviews she will be seeking information on:
- who looks after elderly parents in your culture and where they live (is it common for elderly parents to be cared for by their child in the home until they die?)
- the different types of physical, financial and emotional care in your culture
- cultural issues surrounding the care of elderly
- how elderly are valued in your culture- i.e. is their knowledge utilised and respected? How?
She especially wants to hear from people from the Muslim, Hindu and Buddhist faiths.
