Summer rental and hotel specials for retirees

Late summer though to Easter is the ideal time for retirees to consider renting at the beach once the Christmas-New Year and school holidays season is over, according to national rental property agents.

Meryll Smith of Barwon Grove Holiday Rentals in Victoria said that groups of retirees and senior professionals often combined to hire homes in Barwon Heads for weeks at a time from February through to Easter.

She said that rentals at that time were 25% to 30% cheaper with the top of the range being $4,995 for a week in December and January and $2,995 a week from February to April.

At Coolum on the Queensland Sunshine Coast Northshore Realty principal Noel Mooney told the Australian Financial Review that their rental properties were booked out during the Christmas period but the best time to visit was in late January and February when prices could fall by up to 40%.

“We have had our board out advertising late January specials which is likely to attract bargain hunters. But February is the best time to come. You get the best deals, the beach to yourself, and the best weather,” Mr Mooney said.

In the hotel travel field, Accor Asia Pacific spokeswoman, Gaynor Reid, said that post-peak bookings were strong.

“After holding off last year Australians are now planning to make the most of cheaper room rates  and are realising that you can enjoy a summer holiday outside peak times that is much more affordable than during school holiday periods,” Ms Reid said.
