Subsidised holidays for European Union pensioners
The European Union has declared that tourism is a human right and pensioners and others too poor to afford it, should have their travel subsidised by the taxpayer.
A report in The Australian says that the European Union Commissioner for Enterprise and Industry, Antonio Tarjani, has organised a pilot program which will subsidise travel up to 30% of the trip costs, for pensioners and anyone over 65 years, plus young people between 18-25 years, families facing ‘difficult social, financial and personal circumstances’ and the disabled.
In the initial phase, northern Europeans will be encouraged to visit southern Europe and vice versa.
“Travelling for tourism today is a right. The way we spend our holidays is a formidable indicator of our quality of life,” Mr Tarjani was quoted as saying.
