Student wins $1,000 for Brisbane nursing home

A Brisbane nursing home has received a $1,000 donation from Caltex, thanks to a local school girl who has been volunteering at the facility for the past six months.

Kedron Nursing Home received the payment because of a winning entry from Mount Alvernia College’s Emma Davis in the annual Caltex Best All Rounder Award national writing competition.

Entrants in the competition were invited to submit a persuasive recommendation explaining why $1,000 should be given to a community group or charity of their choice.

Ms Davis convinced the judging panel that Kedron Nursing Home was a worthy recipient, by writing about the enrichment she had gained from visiting the centre’s residents.

“The people I have met here have enriched my life and passed on something truly special to me,” she wrote in her submission.

“They have offered me the knowledge and wisdom of their years by sharing their stories with me and in return I would love to give something back to them.”

The facility’s director of nursing, Anastasia Gair, congratulated Ms Davis for her volunteering efforts.

“She also showed outstanding initiative in entering the writing competition with a view to donating winnings to our nursing home,” Ms Gair said. “We will use the money to purchase the little extras that add a sparkle to the residents’ lifestyle.”
