Strong support from AOD sector for Drug Action Week

Alcohol and other drugs (AOD) sector and community organisations around Australia have rallied in support of the 2007 Drug Action Week (DAW) from 18 -22 June, which will feature a 30 second television commercial.

“The interest this year has been tremendous with some 146 events registered on the national calendar of events for Drug Action Week,” chief executive officer of the Alcohol and other Drugs Council of Australia (ADCA), Ms Donna Bull, said.

“Drug Action Week is for everyone working to reduce drug-related harm in Australia and provides us with opportunities to remind ourselves that drugs encompass more than just heroin and cannabis.”

Ms Bull said this ADCA initiative was about raising awareness about alcohol and other drug issues and promoting the achievements of those who work to reduce drug related harm.

“The range of events in all states/territories will I am certain promote healthy public debate about good practice strategies for reducing drug-related harm,” Ms Bull said.

“Community use of drugs, whether it is alcohol, caffeine, prescription medicines or illicit substances needs better understanding, education and awareness, and Drug Action Week is about events that inform and involve communities, educators, individuals, the media and governments.”
