Stroke patients not to wear compression stockings
A study published in the Lancet has shown that compression stockings do not reduce the risk of blood clots after stroke and should be abandoned by acute stroke patients.
The findings contradict guidelines that recommend acute stroke patients wear thigh-length ‘antithrombotic’ stockings in hospital following a stroke.
Full-length stockings are routinely worn in hospital stroke units around Australia, but experts say guidelines need revising and the practice should stop.
