Spot checks working
Senator Santo Santoro
Federal Minister for Ageing, Senator Santo Santoro, says random inspections of nursing homes are working well. The Minister introduced the spot checks in April along with compulsory police checks for workers after reports of sexual and physical abuse in nursing homes. Further measures were introduced last month including a system for compulsory reporting of abuse and assaults, and the appointment of an Aged Care Commissioner. Senator Santoro has told the Senate 106 random inspections were conducted in July.
