Single Age Pension in the news
Families, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs Minister, Mal Brough, has admitted the single age pension is “incredibly challenging to live on”.
He has hinted the Federal Government would look at improving it.
At the same time, the senator who is heading the Inquiry into the cost of living pressures for older Australians has publicly apologised for his comments about pensioners.
Senator Gary Humphries has been quoted as saying he could not live off the single age pension and that it was fortunate many seniors had lived through rough times and were equipped to cope with these conditions.
As part of the Seniors Vote 2007 election demands, National Seniors is pushing for the single age pension to be raised to two thirds of the couple pension. This would result in an approximate boost of $30 a week to a single pensioner on the full pension.
